Connecting bilingual volunteers with patients who need language support
Founded in 2026, Georgetown Medical Interpreters partners with clinics across the DMV area to provide free medical interpretation services by trained Georgetown students. We currently offer interpretation services in Spanish, Mandarin and Korean.
About Us
Georgetown Medical Interpreters is a student-run organization at Georgetown University dedicated to breaking down language barriers in healthcare. We recruit and train bilingual Georgetown students to serve as volunteer medical interpreters at partner clinics across the DMV area.
Our volunteers are trained to interpret accurately and impartially in clinical settings, helping patients communicate with their care providers regardless of the language they speak. We currently offer interpretation services in Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean.
How It Works
1
We train interpreters
Bilingual Georgetown students complete our training program to become medical interpreters.
2
Clinics contact us
Partner clinics reach out to let us know when they need volunteers and for which languages.
3
Patients get language support
Volunteers arrive at the clinic and provide real-time interpretation so patients can communicate with their care team.
Our Training Program
Every GMI volunteer completes a structured training curriculum before interpreting at a clinic. Here's what the journey looks like.
Phase 1
Language Assessment
Applicants complete a language proficiency assessment to demonstrate conversational and medical vocabulary fluency in their target language.
Phase 2
Medical Interpreting Fundamentals
A lecture-based module covering the role of the interpreter, ethical guidelines, confidentiality, and the difference between interpreting and translating.
Phase 3
Medical Terminology
Volunteers learn basic medical vocabulary relevant to the types of appointments they will encounter, in both English and their target language.
Phase 4
Simulated Clinic Sessions
Role-play scenarios with trained instructors simulate real patient encounters. Volunteers also listen to audio recordings across a variety of dialects to build comfort with the range of speech they will encounter in the clinic.
Phase 5
Ongoing Education
Active volunteers attend regular skill-building sessions to stay sharp and pick up new vocabulary as our clinic partnerships and language offerings grow.
We welcome bilingual Georgetown students who want to make a difference in their community. Join our training program and start interpreting at partner clinics across the DMV area.
Simply let us know when you need interpreters and which languages are required. We will coordinate and send trained volunteers directly to your clinic at no cost.
